Il territorio comunale si estende per 66,72 kmq tra la Valdera e le colline livornesi, un’area conosciuta e abitata sin dal periodo etrusco. Il primo documento in cui è menzionato il centro risale all’887. Dopo tale data, queste terre passarono sotto controllo di varie famiglie (i Cadolingi di Fucecchio, gli Upezzinghi di Pisa) prima di arrendersi al dominio fiorentino (1406). Fu in occasione di un fallimentare tentativo di ribellione a Firenze che, nel 1496, il castello e la cinta muraria furono distrutti dai fiorentini. Oggi Santa Luce conserva alcune tracce della rocca medievale e mantiene la planimetria dell’antico borgo feudale. L’abitato, che ricalca la linea delle fortificazioni, si stringe a cerchi attorno allo spazio da cui il castello dominava la vallata.

The council borough covers an area, inhabited since the time of the Etruscans, of 66.72 square km between the Valdera and Livorno hills. The first documented evidence of this area was in 887. After which, the land passed into the hands of various Italian families (the Cadolingis of Fucecchio, the Upezzinghis of Pisa) before surrendering to the Florentine dominium (1406). Due to the failure of a rebellion attempt in Florence, in 1496, the castle and the fortifying walls were destroyed by the Florentines. However, some parts of the castle tower have survived to this day and can be seen in the centre of town. The layout of Santa Luce still maintains its ancient roots – the classical feudal town plan of a circular layout surrounded by fortifying walls.
